What You'll Learn

Respect is treating people with dignity, kindness, and consideration - even when you disagree. It's one of the most important values in martial arts and in life.

This workshop teaches you what respect looks like in action, how to show respect to yourself and others, and why respect builds stronger relationships and communities.

Key Learning Points

1

Respect Starts With Self-Respect

You can't truly respect others if you don't respect yourself. Self-respect means treating yourself with kindness and standing up for your values.

2

Everyone Deserves Respect

Basic human dignity is for everyone - regardless of age, appearance, abilities, or differences. You don't have to agree to be respectful.

3

Respect is Action, Not Feeling

You might not like someone, but you can still treat them respectfully. Respect is about behavior and choices, not emotions.

4

Small Actions Show Big Respect

Listening when someone speaks, saying please and thank you, respecting property - little things demonstrate respect every day.

Activity 1: Respect in Action

Identify respectful vs. disrespectful behavior

For each scenario, decide if the behavior shows respect or disrespect.

✅ Respectful

You disagree with your friend's opinion, so you say "I see it differently, but I understand your point."

❌ Disrespectful

You roll your eyes and walk away while your parent is talking to you.

✅ Respectful

Someone is slower at a task, so you wait patiently without complaining.

❌ Disrespectful

You laugh when someone makes a mistake in front of the class.

✍️ How Would YOU Show Respect?

Scenario: Your teacher is explaining something you already know

Scenario: Someone has different beliefs than you

Activity 2: Types of Respect

Learn different ways to show respect

Respect shows up in many forms. Check the ways you'll practice showing respect.
Respect for People: Listen, use kind words, value others' feelings
Respect for Property: Take care of things, ask before borrowing, return items
Respect for Rules: Follow guidelines, understand why rules exist
Respect for Environment: Keep spaces clean, don't litter, care for nature
Respect for Differences: Accept that people are different, celebrate diversity
Respect for Authority: Listen to teachers, coaches, parents with courtesy
Self-Respect: Stand up for yourself, make healthy choices, honor your values

Activity 3: 7-Day Respect Challenge

Practice showing respect every day

Complete one respect action each day. Check them off as you go!
Day 1: Give someone your full attention when they speak (no phone!)
Day 2: Say thank you to someone who helps you
Day 3: Clean up after yourself without being asked
Day 4: Respect someone's "no" - don't pressure or argue
Day 5: Use respectful tone and words, even when frustrated
Day 6: Respect someone's personal space and belongings
Day 7: Show respect to someone you find difficult

Activity 4: My Respect Commitment

Make a personal pledge

Write your personal commitment to showing respect.

Final Reflection

"Why do you think respect is so important in martial arts and leadership? Think of someone who shows you great respect - how does that make you feel? How will you BE that person for others?"
