What You'll Learn

Conflict is normal! Everyone disagrees sometimes. What matters is HOW you handle it. Good conflict skills help you solve problems, keep friendships strong, and feel proud of how you actβ€”even when things get tough.

By the end of this workshop, you'll have practical tools to calm down, listen well, and find solutions that work for everyone.

Key Learning Points

1

Conflict is Normal

Disagreements happen! They're not badβ€”they're opportunities to understand each other better and find solutions together.

2

Calm First, Talk Second

You can't solve problems when emotions are high. Take time to cool down before trying to work things out.

3

Listen to Understand

Really hear what the other person is saying. Try to see their point of view, even if you don't agree with it.

4

Focus on Solutions

Instead of blaming or arguing about who's right, work together to find answers that help everyone feel better.

Activity 1: Types of Conflict

Recognize different kinds of disagreements

Check which types of conflict you've experienced:
😠 Anger Conflict: Getting mad and saying hurtful things
😢 Avoidance Conflict: Ignoring the problem and hoping it goes away
🀝 Compromise Conflict: Both sides give a little to find a solution
πŸ˜” Giving In: Always letting the other person win to avoid fighting
πŸ’¬ Talking It Out: Calmly discussing feelings and finding solutions together

πŸ’‘ The Best Approach

Talking It Out is usually the best way! Sometimes compromise works too. Anger and avoidance usually make things worse.

Activity 2: Cool Down Strategies

Ways to calm yourself when upset

Choose strategies that work for YOU when you're feeling angry or upset:

🫁 Deep Breathing

Take 5 slow, deep breaths

In through nose, out through mouth

🚢 Take a Break

Walk away for a few minutes

Say "I need a moment to calm down"

πŸ”’ Count to 10

Count slowly before responding

This gives your brain time to think

✍️ Write It Down

Jot your feelings on paper

This helps you process emotions

πŸ—£οΈ Talk to Someone

Share with a trusted adult

They can help you see clearly

πŸƒ Physical Activity

Run, jump, or move your body

Exercise releases tension

Activity 3: Using "I" Statements

Express feelings without blaming

"I" statements help you share feelings without attacking the other person:

The "I" Statement Formula

"I feel [emotion]

when [situation]

because [reason]."

Practice: Turn "You" Statements into "I" Statements

❌ "You" Statement: "You're so mean! You never share!"

βœ… "I" Statement:

❌ "You" Statement: "You always ignore me!"

βœ… "I" Statement:

Activity 4: Conflict Resolution Plan

Your step-by-step guide

Practice using these steps for your next conflict:

What will you do?

How will you show you're listening?

Practice an "I" statement:

How can you find a solution?

Final Reflection

"Think of a recent conflict. How could you have handled it better using what you learned? What will you do differently next time?"

Congratulations!
